Most interview questions test how well someone interviews, not how well they’d do the job. AI can help you ask sharper ones.
The Problem With Most Interview Questions
Whether you’re hiring a practice administrator, a surgical scheduler, a patient coordinator, or a medical assistant, the standard interview questions tend to reward people who are comfortable interviewing, not necessarily people who’ll be good at the job itself. “Tell me about a time you handled a difficult patient” gets rehearsed answers. It rarely tells you how someone actually thinks under pressure.
Build Better Questions From The Role Itself
This week’s tip: give AI the responsibilities of the role and the mistakes new hires typically make, and ask it to build questions that reveal how a candidate actually thinks.
Try this prompt:
“I’m hiring a [job title] for my [type of practice]. Key responsibilities: [list 3-4]. Common mistakes people in this role make: [list 1-2]. Write 5 interview questions that will help me tell whether a candidate is actually good at the job, not just good at interviewing.”
Fill in the brackets with your own details, then copy and paste directly into ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, or any AI tool.
Where The Line Stays Human
One note: use this to prepare better questions, not to screen or rank candidates automatically. Hiring decisions should stay a human call. There’s real legal and fairness risk in letting AI make that judgment for you.
This is worth taking seriously in a healthcare setting specifically. Credentialing, licensure verification, and background requirements already carry legal weight, and adding an unvetted automated screening layer on top only adds risk without adding real protection.
Try It This Week
- Pick a role you’re currently hiring or expect to hire soon
- List the real responsibilities and the mistakes new hires in that role tend to make
- Run the prompt above and review the five questions it generates
- Use them to prepare for the interview, keep the actual hiring decision with your team
